Development and characterization of microsatellite markers for the endangered Chinese yew Taxus chinensis var. mairei (Taxaceae)

Authors: H. Xue, C.H. Lu and X.B. Wu

We isolated and characterized 11 microsatellite loci for the Chinese yew, Taxus chinensis var. mairei, an endangered tree species in China, by constructing a (CA)12-enriched library. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 10. The observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.2500 to 0.8333 and the expected heterozygosities.. Read More»

Multivariate analysis to determine the genetic distance among backcross papaya (Carica papaya) progenies

Authors: H.C.C. Ramos, M.G. Pereira, L.S.A. Gon§alves, A.P.C.G. Berilli, F.O. Pinto and E.H. Ribeiro

Morpho-agronomic and molecular (RAPD and ISSR markers) data were used to evaluate genetic distances between papaya backcross progenies in order to help identify agronomically superior genotypes. Thirty-two papaya progenies were evaluated based on 15 morpho-agronomic characteristics, 20 ISSR and 19 RAPD primers. Manhattan, Jacc.. Read More»

Genetic diversity analysis of isolates of the fungal bean pathogen Pseudocercospora griseola from central and southern Brazil

Authors: A.K.R. Abadio, S.S. Lima, M.F. Santana, T.M.F. Salom£o, A. Sartorato, E.S.G. Mizubuti, E.F. Araºjo and M.V. de Queiroz

Planting resistant varieties is the most effective control measure against the angular leaf spot of dry beans, a fungal disease caused by Pseudocercospora griseola. However, dry bean varieties with durable resistance are not easily obtained. Knowledge about the genetic variability of the pathogen population is key for the succ.. Read More»

Absence of SH2B3 mutation in nonobese diabetic mice

Authors: Y.J. Li, X.Y. Li, X.R. Guo, Y. Li, B.F. Shen, Y.C. Shi and J.Y. Zhang

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease characterized by mononuclear cell infiltration, with subsequent destruction of insulin-producing β-cells. Studies have identified strong associations between type 1 diabetes and several chromosome regions, including 12q24. Association between type 1 diabetes and .. Read More»

Characterization of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense variant surface glycoprotein LiTat 1.5

Authors: L. Van Nieuwenhove, S. Rog©, V. Lejon, Y. Guisez and P. B¼scher

At present, all available diagnostic antibody detection tests for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense human African trypanosomiasis are based on predominant variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs), such as VSG LiTat 1.5. During investigations aiming at replacement of the native VSGs by recombinant proteins or synthetic peptides, the seq.. Read More»

Differential expression analysis of porcine MDH1, MDH2 and ME1 genes in adipose tissues

Authors: S.L. Zhou, M.Z. Li, Q.H. Li, J.Q. Guan and X.W. Li

Malate dehydrogenases 1 and 2 (MDH1 and MDH2), and malic enzyme 1 (ME1) play important roles in the Krebs cycle for energy metabolism. The mRNA abundance changes of MDH1, MDH2 and ME1 genes were measured across six different adipose tissues from the leaner Landrace and fatty Rongchang pig breeds using quantitative real-time PC.. Evaluation of the effects of androgen receptor gene trinucleotide repeats and prostate-specific antigen gene polymorphisms on prostate cancer

Authors: D. Alptekin, M. Izmirli, Y. Bayazit, H.U. Luleyap, M.B. Yilmaz, B. Soyupak, M.A. Erkoc and Z. Tansug

The number of trinucleotide repeats [CAG (coding for polyglutamine), GGC (coding for polyglycine)] in the first exon of the androgen receptor (AR) gene and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) gene androgen response element I A/G polymorphism are both related to prostate cancer prognosis. We investigated whether these genomic chang.. Read More»

Authors: R.M. Ribeiro, A.T. do Amaral Jºnior, L.S.A. Gon§alves, L.S. Candido, T.R.C. Silva and G.F. Pena

As part of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense recurrent selection program of popcorn, we evaluated full-sib families of the sixth cycle of recurrent selection and estimated genetic progress for grain yield and expansion capacity. We assessed 200 full-sib families for 10 agronomic traits, in a randomized block design.. Read More»

Genome-wide identification and characterization of simple sequence repeat loci in grape phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae

Authors: H. Lin, M.S. Islam and D.W. Ramming

A genome-wide sequence search was conducted to identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci in phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae, a major grape pest throughout the world. Collectively, 1524 SSR loci containing mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexanucleotide motifs were identified. Among them, trinucleotide repeats were .. Read More»

The TP53 tumor suppressor gene plays an important role in cell cycle regulation; polymorphisms of this gene have been associated with endometriosis. We examined the role of TP53 codon 72 polymorphism by comparing genotypes of 235 healthy Mexican women (controls with surgically excluded endometriosis) with the genotypes of 151 .. Read More»
