Detection of two morphologically cryptic species from the cursor complex (Akodon spp; Rodentia, Cricetidae) through the use of RAPD markers

Authors: G.M. Yazbeck, R.L. Brand£o, H.M. Cunha and A.P. Paglia

The cursor complex is a group within the Akodon genus of South American rodents, formed by Akodon cursor and A. montensis. Correct distinction between these two species is of great importance since they can harbor different Hantavirus strains. These species are only distinguishable by means of karyotypic or internal anatomic f.. Read More»

Estimation of genetic diversity among sunflower genotypes through random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis

Authors: M.A. Iqbal, H.A. Sadaqat and I.A. Khan

The genetic diversity among eight sunflower lines was determined through the estimation of the random amplified polymorphic DNA method. One hundred and fifty-six DNA fragments were generated by 20 random primers, for an average of about 7.8 bands per primer. Of these amplified DNA fragments, 104 were polymorphic among the eight sunflower lines. Nei and Li.. Read More»

Semi-quantitative detection of gene expression using bisbenzimide dye

Authors: P. Kittimongkolsuk, T. Tencomnao, R. Santiyanont

An electrochemical biosensor, using a disposable electrochemical printed chip aggregation by the bisbenzimide dye (Hoechst 33258), was used for detecting the expression of b-actin and RAGE genes. Using linear sweep voltammetry, the expression of these two genes in HeLa and HepG2 cell lines was determined based on anodic peak c.. Read More»

A novel genetic variant of the goat Six6 gene and its association with production traits in Chinese goat breeds

Authors: C.Y. Pan, X.Y. Lan, H.Y. Zhao, S.R. Hu, Y.T. Huai, C.Z. Lei and H. Chen

We looked for novel genetic variations within the Six6 gene by PCR-SSCP, DNA sequencing and forced RFLP-PCR and estimated their associations with production traits in 2132 goats of eight indigenous Chinese breeds. A novel single nucleotide polymorphism (NM_001104993.1: g.232T>C) within the goat Six6 gene was identified. The.. Read More»

Application of 16S rRNA, cytochrome b and control region sequences for understanding the phylogenetic relationships in Oryx species

Authors: H.A. Khan, I.A. Arif, A.A. Al Homaidan and A.H. Al Farhan

The present study reports the application of mitochondrial markers for the molecular phylogeny of Oryx species, including the Arabian oryx (AO), scimitar-horned oryx (SHO) and plains oryx (PO), using the Addax as an outgroup. Sequences of three molecular markers, 16S rRNA, cytochrome b and a control region, for the above four taxa were aligned and the top.. Read More»

High genetic differentiation of Aegla longirostri (Crustacea, Decapoda, Anomura) populations in southern Brazil revealed by multi-loci microsatellite analysis

Authors: M.L. Bartholomei-Santos, P.A. Roratto and S. Santos

Species with a broad distribution rarely have the same genetic make-up throughout their entire range. In some cases, they may constitute a cryptic complex consisting of a few species, each with a narrow distribution, instead of a single-, widely distributed species. These differences can have profound impacts for biodiversity .. Read More»

Molecular characterization of caj¡, Spondias mombin (Anacardiaceae), by RAPD markers

Authors: A.T.B. Lima, V.A.B. de Souza, R.L.F. Gomes and P.S.C. Lima

The arboreal species Spondias mombin L. (Anacardiaceae) is widely distributed in Brazil, where the fruits, known by the common name of cajá, are an important commercial commodity. We evaluated genetic variability among 32 cajá accessions of the Germplasm Collection of Embrapa Meio-Norte using RAPD technique. Reac.. Read More»

Genetic parameters for pre-weaning traits in Braunvieh cattle

Authors: D.C. Cucco J.B.S. Ferraz L.F.B. Pinto J.P. Eler J.C.C. Balieiro E.C. Mattos

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for pre-weaning traits of Braunvieh cattle raised under tropical conditions in Brazil. The weight and weight gain parameters were birth weight (BW, N = 9955), weight at 120 days of age (W120, N = 5901), weaning weight at 205 days (WW, N = 6970), weight gain from bi.. Read More»

Novel NKX2-5 mutations responsible for congenital heart disease

Authors: J. Wang, X.Y. Liu and Y.Q. Yang

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect and is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality resulting from birth defects. Increasing evidence demonstrates that genetic variation in the NKX2-5 gene, which encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor crucial to cardiogenesis, is an important m.. Read More»

Meta-analysis demonstrates no association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and prostate cancer risk

Authors: M.S. Li, J.L. Liu, Y. Wu, P. Wang and H. Teng

We examined whether p53 codon 72 polymorphism confers prostate cancer risk by conducting a meta-analysis. Two investigators independently searched the Pubmed, Embase and CBM databases. This meta-analysis was made of seven case-control studies, that included 892 prostate cancer cases and 1020 healthy controls. Meta-analysis res.. Read More»
